Importance of Taking Care of Yourself After Laser Hair Removal

Before undergoing laser hair removal, most patients will learn just about everything that they can concerning the procedure. There are a number of online resources, printed pamphlets available at treatment centers, and books available for purchase at many bookstores. While these resources are great at teaching you what will happen during a laser hair removal procedure, many fail to follow through with the post-procedure process.

After undergoing laser hair removal, your body will not be the same as it was when you first walked into the hair removal treatment center. It won't take long for your skin to return back to normal. But it many need extra care for a period of time. Before you leave the treatment center, find out exactly what you should and should not be doing and for how long.

Knowing how to take care of yourself after undergoing laser hair removal is just as important as learning about the procedure itself. Your own laser hair removal doctor should provide you with a list of after treatment guidelines. If you are interested in preparing yourself, a sample of a few precautions that you may need to take follows:

• Protect yourself from sunburn. After a laser hair removal procedure, your skin more susceptible to sunburn because the skin surface is more exposed. If you haven't already developed the habit, start wearing sunscreen if you will be outside for an extended period of time. Or, for that matter, any length of time. Exposure to the sun is one of the major causes of skin aging and can even cause cataracts. Throw out that old rancid sunscreen and buy some fresh. While you're at it get a lip gloss with sunscreen in it too. And use it.
• Many physicians will urge you to apply certain lotions or moisturizing creams to the hair removal area. Many of these may be purchased from a drug store or a department store. It is also possible that your physician may choose to prescribe a stronger moisturizing lotion or cream. Never forget that old standby, freshly harvested aloe vera, for soothing your skin post-treatment.
• After your laser hair removal procedure, you may be asked to return for another treatment session or a follow-up appointment. Many patients undergo a procedure coined "permanent laser hair removal". Permanent laser hair removal eliminates ALL unwanted body hairs in the treatment area. A number of laser machines do not achieve permanent laser hair removal. A follow-up appointment may be needed to determine if the procedure was a success or if additional treatment is necessary.
• Know ahead of time whether or not your laser hair removal treatment will achieve a hair reduction or a complete elimination. If you notice any body hair growing back in the area where your permanent laser hair removal procedure took place, call your doctor right away. Most laser treatment centers will extend the number of treatments if your permanent laser hair removal procedure does not produce acceptable results.
